Analysis: It appears that Marner is being used as a scapegoat for Toronto’s early Stanley Cup Playoffs loss. His missing act during the postseason has angered the fan base. A lot of people have urged Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving to deal the former star player for the London Knights.

Since Toronto was ousted in the first round by the Boston Bruins, there have been a lot of rumors that Marner is being dealt. Many wanted him removed from the city on the first train or plane. Dealing with a player that has a complete no-movement clause is more difficult, though.

Extension Rather than Trade

Dreger is now aware of rumors that Marner may be granted an extension. The native of Markham, Ontario, is approaching the last year of a contract that will pay him almost $11 million. It can seem like a steep price to keep Marner when there are other needs on the team. The increase in the pay cap is excellent news. Still, that’s a lot of cash to spend on just three or four guys. Although Marner has excellent regular-season statistics, Leafs supporters are desperate for post-season triumph.

Regarding Marner’s next move, there are a lot of factors to consider. In past issues, we have talked about our concerns over Toronto’s trade of Marner. The Colorado Avalanche’s actions following Nazem Kadri’s agreement are a reminder to the organization. Realistic concerns exist that Marner will prosper in a deal.

Treliving also does not wish to lose a valuable player. Dealing will be challenging because Marner appears to have the upper hand. It would be difficult to make a trade without leverage, and he would need to ratify any agreement.

If Marner is extended, Toronto will maintain a premier player. Nevertheless, the Leafs’ inability to improve their goaltending and defense has bound them. Cutting costs at other places would condemn Toronto to additional May and June tea parties rather than a Yonge Street procession.
