Breaking News:Lakers have signed JJ Redick to a four-year, $500 million contract.

ESPN announced on Thursday that J.J. Redick, an NBA television commentator for the network, has agreed to a four-year contract to take over as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Redick, 39, spent 15 seasons as an NBA player but has never had a coaching position.

That was of no consequence to the Lakers, who supposedly made Redick their primary target when UConn coach Dan Hurley turned down a six-year, $70 million deal to move from the collegiate ranks—where he had won two national championships—to Hollywood.

Finding JJ Redick some assistant coaches is already on his to-do list, as he and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka finalize Redick’s deal to take over as head coach. Owing to JJ’s lack of expertise, two former Lakers are among the many well-known personalities on the list of contenders.

Shams Charania said that “former head coach and current Trail Blazers assistant Scott Brooks, former Lakers guard Rajon Rondo, former Lakers and current Dallas Mavericks assistant Jared Dudley, and Cassell” are among the assistant coaching contenders for Redick’s staff.

Former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks oversaw the team throughout portions of its heyday when Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were players. Although he is the Trail Blazers’ top assistant coach at the moment, his offensive background makes him an invaluable resource for any new head coach. Sam Cassell, a former point guard who now an assistant to the Boston Celtics, the defending NBA champions, is another example of this.
