BREAKING NEWS: Magic is only prepared to extend a short-term contract to Klay, a free agent.

Realistically, one of the Warriors great Klay Thompson’s suitors might not be able to give him the alluring free-

agent deal he desires.Thompson wants long-term contracts, but the Orlando Magic will prioritize short-term

agreements when they negotiate during free agency, according to Yahoo! Sports senior source Jake Fischer on

Friday.

According to sources, Orlando does have plans to pursue a seasoned guard/wing who can spread the floor around

Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero without controlling an excessive amount of on-ball oxygen. Fischer reported

this.

“Orlando seems content to only make a brief offer, akin to the above-market, two-year contract the Magic gave Joe Ingles last season.”

In addition to Thompson, Orlando is also interested in fellow microwave scorers Malik Monk and Paul George, but by June 30th, the veteran Golden State wing may be the only unsigned player remaining.

According to reports, Monk will re-sign with the Sacramento Kings, and George is unsure of his career goals on the court in relation to his work as a podcast presenter. With regard to Thompson, his age, history of injuries, and most recent campaign, in which he averaged 17.9 points on 43.2 percent shooting from the field, would probably provide the Magic leverage in contract negotiations.

The Golden State Warriors

Thompson’s aspirations are unlikely to come true in the upcoming free agency window.

“Perhaps the Magic show that they are amenable to a deal akin to Bruce Brown’s, which the Pacers signed last

summer for a two-year, $45 million contract with a team option for the second season,” said Fischer. According to

insiders, that amount would be less than what Thompson turned down from Golden State before the 2023–24

season and would be far less than the four years and $78 million Sacramento intends to offer Monk.

League insiders also believe that Thompson is looking for a contract that would last at least three seasons. Thus, it would appear that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is currently the veteran eligible to receive the magic cap space.

If accurate, three years appears to be an excessively long commitment for the Magic, leaving Thompson in a precarious situation.

The 12-year veteran was reportedly extended a two-year contract offer by the Warriors earlier on Friday, but no agreement was reached. Before the 2023–24 NBA season began, Golden State also suggested a two-year contract extension to Thompson, but that proposal also failed.

Where Thompson signs, how much he will sign for, and when will all be unknown. If anything, it might be preferable for the two-way shooter to end his career with the Warriors for at least one more season.

In any case, Fischer claims that the Magic won’t live up to Thompson’s expectations from the contract.

Additionally, career and championship window clocks are running out.
