Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka are negotiating to sign a $208 million All-Star.

Austin Reaves, a guard for the Getty Lakers, would be included in a large deal to add Donovan Mitchell. The NBA is slowly but surely wrapping up the just concluded Finals and transitioning to the summer remodeling season, and few clubs have as intriguing a slate of opportunities as the Lakers. As we approach trade season, the team’s top wish-list candidate is still the same, despite the fact that the team has undergone significant upheaval following the drama of the just concluded coaching search: NBA player Donovan Mitchell

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, it’s still unknown precisely what Mitchell’s summer plans are. There is still a feeling that he is willing to sign a max deal of $208 million in order to remain with the Cavaliers.

However, Mitchell’s name will resurface in trade discussions if the Cavaliers decide in the following days that it would be wiser to cut Mitchell loose, forego the financial outlay required to acquire him, and surround Darius Garland and Evan Mobley with more capable supporting cast members. And the club that would be chasing him the most would be the Lakers.

Donovan Mitchell ‘Still 1 and 1A’

In an interview with Heavy Sports, a league executive discussed many potential Lakers trade targets, saying that Donovan Mitchell remains their first choice, should a trade ever be considered. Their best chance is him. In an ideal scenario, LeBron James and Anthony Davis might be joined by an All-Star who could play alongside James and eventually succeed him when he retires. Even at 27 years old, Mitchell has eight, nine, or ten years left in him.

“Aside from that, they are happy with their team and will likely make more minor adjustments, but they will make changes—significant ones for those key players.”

The general consensus in the league for the past almost two months has been that Mitchell will stay put in Cleveland and accept the maximum four-year, $208 million contract the Cavaliers can offer. Nothing has emerged to imply that Mitchell is committed to Cleveland, nor has there been any indication that he wants to leave.
