Mets may have suitors for resurgent RHP ahead of MLB trade deadline

At the MLB trade deadline on July 30, the New York Mets were one victory away from being sellers, but a recent seven-game winning run turned things around.

The Mets are still expected to make changes in the upcoming month, but one of their main players will probably end his time in New York. The Milwaukee Brewers will be actively looking for starting pitchers to improve their team, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic. Regarding Severino as one of the Brewers’ best alternatives, Bowden said the following (via Patrick McAvoy of Fan Nation’s Inside the Mets:

“Position targets: relief and starting pitching,” stated Bowden. “SP: Jack Flaherty, Garrett Crochet, Erick Fedde, Tyler Anderson, Jesús Luzardo, Luis Severino, and Trevor Williams…The Brewers have communicated to the other clubs their desire to upgrade their starting and relief pitching around the trade deadline, even if they are happy with their current pool of position players.

Severino’s strong play in 2024 would aid whichever team he’s on come August

In 2024, Severino has been the most favorable aspect of the Mets’ pitching staff. After a disappointing 2023 performance, the Dominican talent has greatly improved. In 2024, he had a 4-2 record, a 3.52 ERA, and 61 strikeouts.

The 30-year-old, filling in for the injured Kodai Senga, has become the Mets’ de facto ace. In spite of this, New York could find it advantageous to let go of Severino. The Houston Astros and the Brewers are the other teams connected to the former New York Yankees player.

Milwaukee (45–33) leads the NL Central and is third overall in the league thanks to a five-game cushion that prevents them from falling into the Wild Card spot. Despite helping the sixth-best club in baseball, their pitching staff as a whole has only produced 20 quality starts this season, which is a pitiful No. 28 in the whole Major League Baseball. They are ranked No. 25 overall due to their 604 strikeouts.

Severino is necessary for the Brewers. He would be one of their system’s highlighted cogs. However, the Mets also require him. Once Senga returns, it will be up to Mets president David Stearns to decide whether Severino is better off being their No. 2 option going forward or on the trade market.
