The Baltimore Ravens would prefer to keep Lamar Jackson happy, but renegotiating his deal would help the team address two of its most
pressing issues.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report believes that a restructuring before the 2024 season makes reasonable. According to him, “the Ravens
could restructure a portion of their $14.3 million salary to get immediate cap relief.” If a wide receiver or edge rusher becomes available
via a trade or free agency, the Ravens may be interested in acquiring one.
In order to finance their relocation, the Ravens would thus be “borrowing against Jackson’s contract.” Given how abruptly meddling with
his finances may make the two-time NFL MVP hostile ahead of a crucial campaign, it would be a dangerous move.
However, Ballentine believes that Jackson’s $43.7 million 2025 cap hit is doable. The drawback of a restructuring is that it would increase
his $74.7 million hits in 2026 and 2027. When the time comes to get those hits down, the Ravens would be able to add money to the two
vacant years that are already on his deal.
Ballentine brought out the fact that Jackson will turn 30 in 2027, raising the possibility that neither party will be considering reaching a new agreement. Meanwhile, Ballentine believes the Ravens “should be worried about utilizing some cap savings to address a few important needs and capitalizing on his 2023 MVP campaign.”
Eric DeCosta, general manager of the Ravens, would have to exercise careful balance in order to implement this strategy. One that recognizes Jackson’s worth on and off the field and is realistic about the Ravens’ need for a stronger roster in order to make the most of their final Super Bowl window.
