Memphis Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman, said he regretted signing Zach Edey due to….

Zach Edey of Purdue was chosen by Memphis Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman on

Wednesday night in the 2024 NBA Draft, and the prospect thrilled him. The club was “thrilled” to

still have the 7-foot-4 center, a two-time National Player of the Year, on the roster at No. 9.

The Grizzlies made Edey their ninth overall choice on Wednesday night. Following Memphis’

selection, Kleiman discussed the choice to choose the big Purdue player with reporters.

“Zach Edey is a particularly special fit [for the franchise],” Kleiman stated. “After getting to know

him, we are talking about a person whose level of caring and competitiveness is through the sky.

Wants to win, no ego.”

After finishing the 2023–24 season with averages of 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 2.0

assists per game, Edey is returning to the court. Along the way, he guided the Boilermakers to a 34-5

record, the Big Ten regular season title, and a Final Four appearance.

One of the main benefits of picking Edey, according to Kleiman, is his capacity to produce

mismatches on both sides of the court. He thinks it gives the roster a fresh dimension that opposition

will need to more carefully account for in their game plans.

“What drew us in was Zach’s meticulous consideration of our chances of success against this club.

How do we compare to that team? You have to deal with Zach because he is so unusual,” Kleiman

remarked. We now possess physicality and size advantages over other teams, which will provide

challenges.

“We want to be able to project an advantage with the styles we wear. Give them time to find out how

to handle us. Additionally, throughout the course of a game or series, we might switch up our

appearance. We were particularly interested by the optionality and thought it would actually have an

impact.”

Memphis had a 27-55 record at the end of the previous season. The Grizzlies still own the 39th and

57th choices in the NBA Draft.
