29-year-old quarterback to be cut by the Seahawks soon after signing

There’s a good chance that the Seattle Seahawks will have just two quarterbacks on the field when the new season begins.

Mookie Alexander of the SB Nation Field Gulls predicted on the 53-man roster that P.J. Walker will be released by the Seahawks before to the start of the season. The seasoned quarterback was signed just prior to the team’s June 10 mandatory minicamp.

The Seahawks would open the season with just Geno Smith and Sam Howell as their starting quarterbacks if the projection comes to pass. That lineup really resembles what they used the previous season, with Smith as the starting quarterback and former backup Drew Lock as the other quarterback on the team.

P.J. Walker Carved out NFL Career After Successful Stint in XFL

Walker, a journeyman backup quarterback who turned 29 in 2020, has gotten a respectable amount of playing time since making his Panthers debut in 2020. Throughout his career, Walker has made 21 appearances (nine of which have been starts) and has a 5-4 record while playing for the Cleveland Browns and the Panthers. In 2017, he also signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent.

The five-foot-eleven Walker has thrown six touchdowns versus 16 interceptions for 2,135 passing yards with a 54.6% completion percentage in his NFL career. The highlight of his career came against the Atlanta Falcons in the 2022 season when he recorded the longest air-distanced completion in the NFL Next Gen Stats era, measuring 67.6 yards for a touchdown.

But Walker’s time in the XFL stands out the most. Walker had a 104.4 passer rating in his five games in the 2020 XFL before the COVID outbreak ended the season. He completed his passes with 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. He led the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record and led the league in passing yards and touchdowns.

Walker had a 1-1 season in 2023 with the Browns, tossing one touchdown against five interceptions for a 52.2 passer rating and 48.6% completion percentage.

In fact, Walker’s last start of the season was during a Week 8 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, where, with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter and Cleveland leading 20-17, he threw a game-changing interception. With 38 seconds left, Geno Smith finally threw the game-winning touchdown pass after the interception.
