The New York Mets’ Pete Alonso, a two-time Derby winner, said on Sunday that he will take part in

the 39th All-Star Game Home Run Derby on July 15 at Globe Life Field.

On July 16, the 94th All-Star Game will take place at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Alonso can become the first person to win the Derby three times, joining Ken Griffey Jr. with another

victory. Baseball Hall of Famer Griffey won three titles in a row: 1994, 1998, and 1999.

Alonso is the eighth player to participate in five or more Derby seasons overall and the first to

compete in the competition in five straight seasons (the 2020 event was canceled).

On Monday, July 15, during the 2024 season, four-time All-Star Pete Alonso of the @Mets will try to

tie Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time Derby champion.

The first baseman has committed to playing in the field of eight, joining Alex Bohm of the Phillies

and Gunnar Henderson of the Orioles. José Ramírez of the Guardians, Teoscar Hernández of the

Dodgers, and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers are other possible participants. Aaron Judge, the slugger

for the Yankees who leads MLB with 32 home runs, Juan Soto, and Yordan Alvarez of the Astros

have all said that they would not be playing.

In his first Derby of 2019, Alonso defeated Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Cleveland, outslugging him

despite Guerrero hitting 91 home runs in his single-Derby record while Alonso hit 57 overall. This

was his debut season.Alonso, 29, announced the Derby on social media on Sunday night after being

chosen for his fourth All-Star Game.Following the COVID-19 pandemic-related cancellation of the

Derby in 2020, Alonso made a comeback in 2021, defeating Trey Mancini of the Orioles 23–22 in the

championship round. With 35 of those home runs coming in the first round, Alonso’s 74 total home

runs rank fourth in Derby history.

Guerrero Jr. won his first Derby in 2023 after defeating Rays slugger Randy Arozarena 25–23 in the

championship game.
