Players pleading with Steve Cohen and the New York Mets executive staff to be buyers at the trade deadline
Owner Steve Cohen of the New York Mets said before the season started that his team was probably
a year away from becoming competitive. As a result, there was a significant selloff, and last year the
Mets parted ways with a number of veterans, including Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer.
However, the 2024 Mets have performed better than anticipated, coming into MLB games today
with a.500 record. The Mets now appear to be a team that may become buyers at the MLB trade
deadline on July 30, despite everyone’s expectation that they would start the game as sellers.
This week, David Stearns, the organization’s president of baseball operations, and Brandon Nimmo,
the player with the oldest contract on the team, had a conversation with Steve Cohen, the owner of
the Mets. His intention was to beg ownership to add many players before the cutoff.
“I kind of chuck that in there whenever I have the chance. We are not that far away from being a
serious competitor, in my opinion.
The Mets trail the NL East division lead by 13.5 games going into today’s play. However, they might
still make the playoffs since they are only 2.5 games away of a Wild Card berth. They are scoring
enough runs; as of right now, they have 424 runs scored, good for sixth place in the NL.
However, the bullpen is one area where the Mets could definitely need a few upgrades. With an ERA
of 4.21, their whole staff—starters included—ranks 11th in the National League. The Mets should be
able to acquire one or more upgrades this summer if Cohen and Stearns are willing, since there are
fortunately a number of players mentioned in this year’s MLB trade rumors.
