Mets’ Luis Severino pokes fun at former team, says Yankees ‘only have two good hitters’
Next week will mark the conclusion of the Mets
and Yankees’ 2024 Subway Series. The Yankees
will try to exact revenge in the Bronx after the
Mets defeated them two games to one at Citi
Field last month. Luis Severino will not play
against his former team as the Mets confirmed
on Friday that seasoned lefties Jose Quintana and
Sean Manaea will start the two Subway Series
games. He also skipped last month’s game
against the Yankees. Naturally, Severino’s former
Yankees teammates are pissing him off about it,
but Severino made a strong recovery.
“We have a group chat, the guys who’ve been
through the Yankees and stayed with the
Yankees. They talk s— about me, like, ‘You’re
afraid of us,'” Severino said Friday. “I said, ‘I’m
not afraid of you guys. Right now you only have
two good hitters.’ I can walk those two guys. It’s
always friendly competition with players I’ve
already played with. It’s going to be fun, and
hopefully in the future I can face them.”
Hey, Severino’s not wrong! The Yankees are
heavily reliant on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
Since Giancarlo Stanton got hurt on June 22,
Judge and Soto are hitting .291/.431/.575 with 11
home runs. The rest of the Yankees are hitting
.214/.283/.354 with 16 home runs. That’s in 19
games too. Not, like, five. The Yankees are a two-
man army. The good news for the Yankees, I
suppose, is that Stanton, who had a.795 OPS and
18 home runs prior to his hamstring injury, went
through full agility drills on Friday and could be
able to return to the team soon. Of course, the
Yankees led MLB in average runs per game going
into the second half, even with the non-Judge/
Soto side of the offense being so lackluster.
Severino, on the other hand, has pitched 109 2/3
innings with a 3.78 ERA in his impressive
comeback season. He has also remained well.
From 2019 to 23 injuries were a major issue. For
the Yankees last season, Severino tossed 89 1/3
innings with a 6.65 ERA. After the season, the two
teams split ways, and Severino is doing well with
his fresh start in Queens.
