Prospect For The New York Mets On The Rise Wins Midseason Award From Publication
The New York Mets’ MLB Futures Game
representative starts the second half of the
season with a new honor. It’s been a good week
for New York Mets pitching prospect Brandon
Sproat. The Pensacola, Fla., right-hander got a
break from the final couple of days of the first
half of the minor league season for a good reason
— he represented the Mets at the MLB Futures
Game during All-Star weekend at Globe Life Field
in Arlington, Texas.
As the second half gets underway, Baseball
America has bestowed upon him a new accolade.
The Florida product was selected as the Mets’
best midseason minor league performer by the
journal, which recognized the best player for
each club. Reunited with the Double-A
Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Sproat is a Top 50
prospect in Baseball America’s first professional
season, which makes sense given that he was
included in the midseason award list. He was
originally sent to New York’s High-A club in
Brooklyn to start the season, then on May 13, he
was promoted to Binghamton.
Having pitched in 14 games (13 starts) and
amassed a 6-1 record with a 1.71 ERA, he has
been outstanding at both stops. Only. 168 was
being hit by batters against him. “Batters have
struggled to solve Sproat, who is one of the
hardest-throwing starting pitchers in the minor
leagues,” according to Baseball America. In 73.2
innings this season, he had struck out 85 while
walking only 28.
While with the NL Futures team in Arlington, the
23-year-old entered the game in relief in the
third inning, as he worked around an infield
error to induce a pop-out and then a 6-4-3
double play that ended that inning.
The NL ended up winning the game.
Sproat didn’t pitch professionally last year as he
helped the Florida Gators reach the College
World Series championship series against the
LSU Tigers. So the Mets gave his arm a rest.
The Mets had such high expectations for him that
they selected him twice. In 2023, New York
selected Sproat in the second round. However,
the Mets passed on him in the third round of the
2022 draft before he made the decision to return
to the Gators and spend his remaining eligibility.
He was noticed by many scouts during that 2022
season after pitching 106.1 innings, going 9-4,
and recording a 3.14 ERA. He was named to the
Second Team All-SEC and struck out 134 times.
The Mets have recently had success selecting
players from Florida in the draft. Christian Scott,
one of their starting pitchers right now, was a
teammate of Sproat prior to the Mets selecting
him with their fifth-round pick in the 2021 MLB
Draft. Earlier this year, Scott made his MLB
debut.
