SNY’s Ron Darling couldn’t believe Mets walk-off win
SNY’s Ron Darling couldn’t believe Mets walk-off win
SNY has catered to New York Mets fans
throughout the years by showcasing the booth’s
response to some of the biggest games of the
season. Considering that the Mets boast one of
the greatest booths in baseball (the best, in the
opinion of AA’s readers), it’s important to
consider the reactions of two former players,
Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez, as well as a
lifelong fan, Gary Cohen, in real time. It goes
without saying, of course, that using rose-colored
spectacles within the booth might undermine its
legitimacy. However, that top-ranked Mets booth
does a fantastic job of offering a more balanced
viewpoint. However, Cohen and his peers are
never hesitant to seize a significant opportunity
and allow their honest and authentic reactions
shine through. That’s what transpired at the
Atlanta Braves game on Thursday. As was
already said, following a thrilling victory, fans
have become used to seeing the live look-ins at
the booth. Thus, Mets supporters were
particularly interested when the video finally
aired on X after Jeff McNeil’s walk-off single in
the bottom of the 10th inning. Cohen stood up.
Cohen is notorious for flinging his pen around
and raising his arms when he’s upset, but he
never allows it stop him from answering a call.
Cohen’s voice and volume both rose up right
before Braves outfielder Ramón Laureano
overran McNeil’s flyball down the right field line.
But perhaps that wasn’t the first thing you
noticed. On the other hand, you have Darling
rolling back in his chair, looking up at
Hernandez in just sheer, utter bewilderment. It’s
truly hard to believe that the Mets have turned
11 games under .500 into being just a half-game
back of the Braves entering Friday .That’s not,
however, what Darling found unbelievable.
Perhaps he’s finding it hard to accept that this
Mets club never gives up and always finds fresh
ways to win. Or maybe it makes more sense since
an outfielder, who is renowned for his glove,
utterly mishandled a flyball that would have
extended the game to the eleventh inning. This is
the same Laureano who gave his team a run
back a half inning ago due to a baserunning
error. Whatever the cause of Darling’s
frustration, he was the star of the show. Cohen is
typically the focus, and that was the case here as
well. However, it’s difficult to ignore Darling as
he stands there, utterly stunned by what has just
happened. Maybe that better captures the
essence of Mets in 2024 season to this point.
But the longtime SNY analyst is just along for a
ride (in his rolling chair) like the rest of us.
