One of the best offensive players in recent HBCU
football history, Tarik Cohen, is getting ready to
leave the New York Jets of the NFL. According to
NFL insider Adam Schefter, Cohen has
communicated his retirement to the Jets. “Tarik
Cohen, a former running back for the Bears who
spent his NFL career trying to recover from a
number of knee ailments, told the Jets today that
he is officially retiring from football. Cohen was
one of the NFL’s most dynamic players at the

Cohen had a brief stint with the Carolina
Panthers as a practice squad player in 2023
before signing with the Jets in the offseason.
At North Carolina A&T, Tarik Cohen quickly
established himself as a standout player. He
became the all-time leading rusher in Mid-
Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) history,
amassing 5,619 yards and 56 touchdowns.
Known as “The Human Joystick” for his agility
and elusive running style, Cohen earned
numerous accolades, including three MEAC
Offensive Player of the Year awards and being
named an FCS All-American multiple times.
NFL scouts were drawn to Cohen because of his
exceptional collegiate performance, and the
Chicago Bears selected him in the fourth round
of the 2017 NFL Draft. Cohen maintained his
impressive flexibility in the NFL, making
contributions as a receiver, return specialist, and
running back. He demonstrated his versatility in
his debut season by scoring touchdowns in three
different ways: punt return, receiving, and
rushing. As a punt returner in 2018, Cohen was
selected for the Pro Bowl and was recognised as
a First-Team All-Pro. Tarik Cohen continues to
have a big influence on the field despite obstacles
