US Olympic gold medalist admits to odd choice of diet during European assignments

Vernon Norwood, an American 400m runner noted for his remarkable relay achievements, has

made a shocking statement about his diet while participating in European events, including the

Paris 2024 Olympics, when he played a critical role in the US 4x400m relay team’s gold medal win.

Norwood, a former LSU Tiger, has had a successful career, especially in relay events. During his

time at LSU, he won four NCAA National Championships in just two seasons, becoming the 14th

sprinter in collegiate history to win both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 400 meters crowns in the same season. His success extended to the international level, where he was part of the U.S. men’s

4x400m relay team that won gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as

Norwood’s winning streak continued in Paris, where he helped the United States retain its men’s

title, adding to his four World Championship triumphs in the same sport.

Given his impressive achievements, one would expect Norwood to follow a strict, nutritious diet in

order to stay in peak form. However, the 32-year-old sprinter has admitted to indulging in an unusual diet choice, particularly during European travels.

“When the food ain’t really cracking on there, I am gonna get that McDonalds man. I ain’t hitting that McDonald’s on a regular basis.”

Despite the occasional indulgence, Norwood is quite rigorous about staying at his ideal weight for

competition. He disclosed that he normally weighs between 165 and 170 pounds, with the goal of

being thin and fit for the hard 400m races.”Everyone has a different speed because I am naturally

slender and lean. “I’m never going to get above 172 because training for the 400 is different,”

Norwood remarked.
