College basketball phenom Cooper Flagg is just a few days away from making his long-awaited regular season debut for the Duke Blue Devils, but this week, it was his twin brother Ace Flagg making headlines.
While Cooper reclassified to the 2024 class as the top recruit and is already projected as the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA draft, his brother opted to remain in the 2025 class and isn’t as highly recruited of a prospect. According to 247Sports, Ace is a three-star power forward and ranks as the No. 272 player in the country.
While Cooper committed to Duke last October, Ace had yet to announce where he’d be playing his college ball. That changed earlier this week as Ace announced his commitment to the Maine Black Bears via an Instagram post on both his personal page and SportsCenter NEXT’s page.
While the Flagg brothers attended the powerhouse program Montverde Academy in Florida, and Ace now attends Greensboro Day School in North Carolina, they are actually Maine natives. Their mother, Kelly, played basketball at Maine, while their dad, Ralph, played at Eastern Maine Community College.
Ace’s new high school is around an hour away from Duke, and also may allow for him to be more of a focal point after being on a Montverde team that was loaded with blue-chip recruits. This past season, Montverde’s roster featured four five-star recruits from the class of 2024 and six recruits total that ranked in the top 100. The elite roster went on to win the 2024 Chipotle High School Nationals and finished the year 34-0.
Ace chose Maine over programs such as West Virginia, George Washington, Boston College and Florida Gulf Coast.
As for Cooper, oddly enough, he will open up his college basketball career on Monday, Nov. 4, against the Maine Black Bears in a game that will air on ACC Network at 7:00 PM ET.
