The Nebraska Cornhuskers are back at home on Saturday for the first time in four weeks, hosting the UCLA Bruins at Memorial Stadium.
A win can make Nebraska bowl eligible and show progress after last week’s strong showing while a loss will create more angst for the fanbase.
Before Saturday’s game, here are the top notes and quotes from throughout the week.
White was talking about linebacker MJ Sherman, whom he also called Nebraska’s “undercover hero” for his physicality, leadership and focus on making the right play.
The senior has 17 tackles and 3.5 sacks this season, the latter ranking as the third-best on the team.
Nebraska’s play-caller was talking about quarterback Dylan Raiola, who had a career-high nine carries and 31 rushing yards last weekend at Ohio State.
Raiola said he always knew he had the ability and was just taking what the defense gave him. It’ll be interesting to see if he continues to use his legs more often the rest of the season.
Robinson said the idea of using him and Jeudy as fullbacks came up late last week after Barret Liebentritt broke a bone in his back that will sideline him the rest of the regular season.
The senior defensive tackle said his position coach, Terrance Knighton, texted him an old video of Nebraska using defensive linemen as blockers on offense to tell him he and Jeudy were taking Liebentritt’s spot in the offense.
The Huskers then ran the play against Ohio State last weekend, which Robinson said he enjoyed.
The true freshman quarterback also enjoyed Robinson and Jeudy playing fullback and elicited some laughs with his description of what it was like with them on the field.
I’d concur with Raiola in that it can’t be fun to see one of those guys coming at you as a defender.
Nebraska’s defensive coordinator said that after praising freshman linebacker Willis McGahee IV.
McGahee has seen the field more in recent weeks and has been producing. He’s totaled eight tackles and a sack this season, and fans can expect to see him more over the final month of the season.
Wright said the team’s play against Ohio State wasn’t shocking to the team, and even though it was good, they still know there is room to improve.
If the Huskers play like that, they can beat any team. We’ll see if that version shows up at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
