Sad News: Texas Longhorns Star Bijan Thompson Forced to Miss Entire 2025 NFL Season
In a heartbreaking turn of events, former Texas Longhorns standout and rising NFL star Bijan Thompson has been ruled out for the entire 2025 NFL season due to a rare and severe nerve injury sustained during offseason training, sources close to the team have confirmed.
Thompson, who was selected 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, was expected to take on a much larger role this season after a promising rookie campaign. But just as fans were beginning to anticipate his breakout year, devastating news emerged from the Falcons’ medical team: Thompson has been diagnosed with brachial plexopathy, a rare nerve condition that affects movement and strength in the shoulder and arm.
A Rising Star’s Sudden Setback
Known for his explosive speed and ability to make defenders miss, Thompson was a fan favorite during his time at the University of Texas. He electrified crowds at DKR Memorial Stadium and finished his college career with 3,105 all-purpose yards and 29 touchdowns. His dynamic playmaking ability earned him All-Big 12 honors and made him one of the most talked-about prospects of his draft class.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” said Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. “Bijan [Thompson] is more than an athlete—he’s a great human being, a leader, and a relentless worker. To see his season taken away like this is tough for all of us.”
NFL Dreams on Hold
According to Falcons team physician Dr. Jenna Calloway, the injury occurred during a weightlifting session in late April. Thompson reportedly felt a “sharp jolt” in his upper back and shoulder area before experiencing numbness in his right arm. After extensive testing, it was determined that the damage to his brachial plexus would require a lengthy recovery period—potentially 9 to 12 months.
“This isn’t just a sprain or a muscle tear,” Dr. Calloway explained in a press conference. “This type of nerve injury is unpredictable and requires intensive rehab. We’re optimistic about a full recovery, but 2025 is off the table.”
Support From Teammates and Fans
The NFL community has rallied behind Thompson since the announcement. Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder shared an emotional post on social media: “You’re one of the toughest guys I know. Take this time, heal up, and come back stronger. We’ve got your back.”
Longhorn Nation has also flooded social media with support under the hashtag #ComeBackBijan, with fans, former teammates, and coaches offering messages of encouragement and sharing favorite memories from his time in Austin.
What’s Next?
Thompson will reportedly remain with the Falcons during his rehabilitation and is expected to take on a mentorship role for younger players during the season. He’s also planning to return to the University of Texas campus this summer to continue coursework toward his degree in sports management.
Though 2025 will be a year of patience and perseverance, both the Falcons and Longhorns community believe the best is yet to come.
“Setbacks like this define character,” said Sarkisian. “If anyone can come back from this stronger, it’s Bijan Thompson.”
