BLOOMINGTON, IN — In a significant shift for the Indiana Hoosiers football program, Curt Cignetti has parted ways with the university, effective immediately. This announcement comes amid a re-evaluation of the team’s direction following a challenging season.
Cignetti, who took the helm of the Hoosiers in 2021, had high hopes for revitalizing the program, which has faced struggles in recent years. Despite initial optimism and a promising start, the team failed to live up to expectations, posting a disappointing record this past season.
Athletic Director Scott Dolson expressed gratitude for Cignetti’s efforts, stating, “We appreciate Curt’s dedication to our football program and the impact he made during his time here. However, we believe a change is necessary to move Indiana football forward.”
Under Cignetti’s leadership, the Hoosiers experienced both highs and lows. While he led the team to some competitive outings, inconsistencies in performance ultimately led to dissatisfaction among fans and alumni. The decision comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance the program’s competitiveness in the Big Ten Conference.
As Indiana embarks on this transition, the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Dolson emphasized the importance of finding a leader who can inspire players and bring a renewed sense of energy to the program.
Former Hoosiers player and assistant coach Tom Allen, who had previously enjoyed a successful tenure as head coach, has been mentioned as a potential candidate, although no formal interviews have been conducted yet.
