SF Giants minor league catcher signs a free agent contract and joins the New York Mets right away
Logan Porter, a minor league catcher for the San
Francisco Giants, activated his opt-out clause
earlier this week, giving the Giants the option of
adding him to the 40-man roster or letting him go
in free agency. He signed with the New York Mets
on Thursday after the Giants decided to allow
him to become a free agency.

The Giants added Porter in a trade with the
Kansas City Royals in June. This felt like a much-
needed depth move given that San Francisco
nearly ran out of catchers in May. In fact, the
Giants went out and added veteran catcher Curt
Casali on a major league deal while both Patrick
Bailey and Tom Murphy were on the injured list.
Jakson Reetz and Blake Sabol took turns catching
during a run of games in May. When Casali was
released to pursue a chance with San Francisco,
he was playing for the Triple-A affiliate of the
Chicago Cubs. The testing of catching depth is
always unpredictable. Consequently, Porter was
acquired by the Giants. With a career.
277/.401/.466 line over six seasons in the minors,
the 29-year-old had a very strong hitting record.
Despite having a brief opportunity with the
Royals the previous season, he performed poorly,
finishing with a.647 OPS in 38 plate appearances.
In the offseason, the Royals designated Porter for
assignment, but he went unclaimed and elected
free agency. However, he returned on a minor
league deal for this season. The right-handed bat
posted a 1.003 OPS with six home runs and 22
RBI in 138 plate appearances with Kansas City’s
Triple-A affiliate before the trade.
Porter’s tenure with the Sacramento River Cats
was brief; nonetheless, throughout his 85 plate
appearances, he recorded a.716 OPS, two home
runs, and six RBI. He alternated between first
base and catcher in the field. Porter now signs a
major league contract with the Mets. With an
overall record of 49-46, the Mets are well-
positioned to win the Wild Card. The veteran
backstop will report to Triple-A for the time
being, but New York may consider him in the
near future.
