Practice Points: Big day for rookies Guyton & Carson
Practice Points: Big day for rookies Guyton & Carson
The final session before the Cowboys’ first day off
camp took place on Sunday. There was still a lot
of intensity even though the pads were worn for
the first time on Tuesday. Observations from
practice on Sunday included the following top
points: Sam Williams went down screaming in
agony during a special teams drill that saw him
grab his left knee, and you could have heard a
pin drop inside the River Ridge Complex early on
Sunday morning. As some worry about the
worst, the medical cart pulled up and took him
off the pitch. The Cowboys “didn’t like what we
saw” on the film, according to Jerry Jones, who
stated as he left practice that Williams is headed
for an MRI injury. – (Nick Harris).
After rupturing his ACL, DeMarvion Overshown
is so eager to return to playing football at a high
level that head coach Mike McCarthy said they
had to scale him back, from special teams, to
stick to the plan for his recovery. Without
sacrificing any of his agility, he has put on some
lean muscle to strengthen his defences and amp
up his impact when he confronts someone.
Moving smoothly, Overshown is being heavily
included into the defensive reps for the first
team. (Patrik Walker) Eric Kendricks successfully
intercepted his first pass of the camp after Dak
Prescott’s throw was cut short over the middle.
Earlier in practice, when Kendricks was working
on ball drills with secondary coach Al Harris, it
instantly translated to the field during the 7-on-7
session. – (Nick Harris) Caelen Carson, a rookie
selected in the fifth round, is taking advantage of
Trevon Diggs’ absence because he is on the
team’s PUP list. The latter is having a fantastic
day so far in Oxnard; his physical playmaking
approach presents a great challenge to
opposition receivers at the line of scrimmage,
and his coverage skills are equally excellent. On
a wonderfully timed throw from Cooper Rush,
Carson pulled in a spectacular interception
downfield, rising to snatch it away at the last
second. (Patrik Walker) People, meet Tyler
Guyton. Without a doubt, there will be setbacks
as the rookie first-round selection gets used to
life in the NFL, and at left tackle, but his
unwavering summertime work ethic is paying
off big time. He was practicing with the first team
on Day 4 of the season, but this time, rookie
Marshawn Kneeland, a second-round pick,
wasn’t lining up against him; also, these were full
team exercises rather than a walkthrough.
Guyton was pitted against Micah Parsons in a
firefight, and Guyton emerged victorious on
multiple occasions. (Patrik Walker) Tyron Billy-
Johnson, the wide receiver, had yet another
impressive game as he established himself as a
reliable option for Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush,
and Trey Lance throughout the day. Even though
Rush doesn’t usually take downfield shots, he
trusted Billy-Johnson to haul in a deep ball down
the right sideline. for a touchdown. The depth of
the wide receiver room has a lot of names, but
Billy-Johnson is stamping his early on in Oxnard.
