Cowboys release cornerback Gareon Conley, who plans to retire
Cowboys on Sunday that his career comeback
was coming to an end. Conley, 29, joined the
Cowboys on June 18 following his performance
in seven games with the D.C. Defenders of the
UFL this season, where he had 25 tackles and two
interceptions. Conley, an Ohio State graduate,
was chosen by the Raiders in the first round
(24th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. Due to
injuries, he only participated in two games as a
rookie. In 2018, he started 14 of 15 games,
recorded 37 tackles, and made three
interceptions. For his career, Conley had 94
tackles and four interceptions in 31 games (26
starts) with the Raiders (2017-19) and Houston
Texans (2019), who obtained him in a midseason
trade. He spent the 2020 season on the Texans’
injured reserve following ankle surgery.
participated in three practices at the Cowboys’
training camp before telling the team he will
retire. Sam Williams, a defensive lineman, was
also taken off the practice pitch on Sunday after
seeming to injure his left leg during a special
teams drill. By Sunday afternoon, the Cowboys
had not releasedbany additional information.
Williams, a projected starter coming into camp,
appeared in 17 games the previous season and
15 games as a rookie in 2022. He finished with 48
tackles and 8.5 sacks.
