The latest Blake Snell rumor could make him a

perfect match for the New York Mets.

Unexpectedly, the San Francisco Giants have

started marketing Blake Snell, their anticipated

free agent signing, before the MLB trade

deadline in 2024. This is a result of the pitching

market being significantly hotter than

anticipated. The Diamondbacks traded AJ Puk in

exchange for a prospect who could hit 30 home

runs. In exchange for two outstanding pitching

prospects, Carlos Estevez was traded. The Giants

saw an opportunity to put Snell on the market to

see what he would return because Garrett

Crochet needed an extension to pitch into

October and Tarik Skubal was essentially coming

off the market. This shouldn’t be seen as a huge

selling move though. This isn’t San Fransisco

entering a wide scale rebuild or anything like

that. They just noticed the incredibly hot market

and wanted to see what the reigning NL Cy

Young could net. There is a small catch in making

a deal for Snell though. More often than not,

when a team deals a player on a massive

contract, the team will eat a portion of his

contract so that the team acquiring him sends

more prospects over in the deal. This can be seen

in almost every deal for a player signed to a

massive extension. It’s the same reason that

three teams are currently paying Max Scherzer

for this year. However, the Giants have stated

that they have no intention of holding onto any

of the enormous Snell contract. His options on

the field may be severely limited as the Giants

would want to force his whole contract upon the

team that acquires him. Few teams could afford

to spend as much as Snell’s contract in the

middle of the season. It also significantly reduces

his value. For a team like the New York Mets, this

is ideal. The Mets are a fantastic fit for Snell and

the current circumstances. The Mets lack a

trustworthy fifth starter in the wake of Kodai

Senga’s devastating injury, which is expected to

keep him out of the lineup for the remainder of

the regular season. There isn’t a better strategy to

close this gap than acquiring a pitcher with a

0.75 ERA this month.

The Mets are also one of the only teams that can

afford this kind of trade. Not only can they afford

it, but it’s almost like the Mets front office is

eager to cough up their money if you look back

on some of the contracts they’ve had on their

books in recent years. These reports should bring

quite a bit of hope to the Mets in their pursuit of

acquiring the Giants ace.
