From the moment Demond Williams Jr. arrived on campus at Washington earlier this year the understanding was he would be the future face of the football program.
As the Huskies prepare for their regular season finale against No. 1 ranked Oregon at Autzen Stadium on November 30, that time could be now after the Arizona native led the team to a 31-19 victory over UCLA last Friday. Williams, a 5-foot-11, 187-pound true freshman, has appeared in all 11 games
for UW this season behind fifth-year starter Will Rogers, a Mississippi State transfer who made his commitment to the previous coaching staff under Kalen DeBoer and stayed after having a conversation with Jedd Fisch back in January. During his weekly Monday press conference this week
Fisch noted that with the true freshman at the controls there are more plays available to call than with Rogers, due mostly to Williams’ dual-threat ability — an element to his game that was highlighted against
No. 6 Penn State when he evaded a pair of Nittany Lions’ pass rushers and scrambled for a 43-yard gain late in the fourth quarter. Again against the Bruins last week Williams displayed more magic in the pocket, turning what would have been a sure sack into a positive gain on the ground with his legs.
