TRADE RUMORS: Team reportedly lose JJ Redick to Eastern Conference squad
After dismissing Darvin Ham earlier in the spring, the Los Angeles Lakers are still looking for a head coach. It’s common knowledge by now that Dan Hurley declined a job offer from the Lakers in order to stay at UConn.
With only one week left until the 2024 NBA Draft, general manager Rob Pelinka and company are once again back at the drawing board. With so many unanswered concerns on the roster and an NBA Playoffs first-round elimination, it’s definitely not a good place to be.
Following Hurley’s rejection of the Lakers, there were reports circulating that former NBA player and media personality JJ Redick was the front-runner for the position. Prior to Hurley’s identity being revealed, he was seen as the favorite when they recently met.
Following the unexpected firing of head coach Monty Williams by the Detroit Pistons earlier on Wednesday, Los Angeles may suddenly have some competition for Redick’s services.
In addition to Redick, James Borrego may be someone to keep an eye on, according to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo! Sports. It’s unclear how much traction Detroit may actually get because Redick is now a top contender for the Lakers position.
Redick and Trajan Langdon, the current front office chief of the Pistons, are indirectly related to Duke. Redick played in Durham from 2003 to 2006, while Langdon was a Blue Devil from 1995 to 1999.
Could the Los Angeles Lakers actually lose out on JJ Redick?
It seems like a plausible scenario. As they look for a new head coach, some applicants believe the Cleveland Cavaliers’ scenario to be superior than what the Lakers have to offer. This was reported earlier in the process.
Detroit just finished a dismal 14-68 season. However, it does have some important young players, such Jalen Duren, Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, and Jaden Ivey.
I think there are a lot of unanswered questions regarding Los Angeles. This summer, LeBron James will choose to not renew his contract. Even though he’s probably coming back, how much authority would a new head coach be ceding to King James?
In addition, Los Angeles will experience even greater pressure than Detroit. That may be a deciding factor for a guy like Redick who has never been a coach.
