The Pittsburgh Steelers Have A History Of Selecting Receivers With Temperament

Diontae Johnson, 18, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, makes a catch against Tre Avery, 23, of the Tennessee Titans,

during the fourth quarter of their game on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. The six-time Super Bowl champion team has benefited greatly from recent picks Diontae Johnson

and George Pickens, but Antonio Brown, a four-time first team All-Pro selection and Super Bowl LV champion, best

captures the risk-reward wideout factor.Ezoic

Brown played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for nine seasons, seven of which saw him selected for the Pro Bowl. From 2013 to 2018, he had six consecutive seasons with 1,250 or more yards.

Indeed, if his plea for a trade had not resulted in his acquisition by the Oakland Raiders, he may have surpassed Steelers great Hines Ward in the record book for the most receiving yards in Pittsburgh team history. As of the start of the 2019 season, Ward’s lead was only 876 yards.

Since then, in response to numerous news outlets portraying him as an example of an ex-NFL player with CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) because of his erratic behavior, Brown has won a Super Bowl with friend Tom Brady for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and launched the website CTESPN.

According to JPA Football via the Pivot Podcast, Brown appears to be taking a break from his more, uh, unusual tweeting on X (you can check out his account here) to share some unexpected details about how he was shot with the first squad back in his Pittsburgh days.

Ben Roethlisberger demanded that Antonio Brown start for the starting squad.

It’s a little surprising that Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown’s quarterback, went out to bat for Brown considering

the resentment that eventually grew between the two. The fact that Bruce Arians, the Steelers’ 2011 head coach and

a long-time, well-known offensive mastermind, was practically forced to start a player who went on to become

probably the best wideout in the whole 91-year history of the team, is even more astonishing.

That being said, it’s a credit to Big Ben for seeing Brown and to Arians for believing in his franchise quarterback enough to start him, a move that obviously paid off handsomely. It remains to be seen if it is the last good (ish) thing that AB says about his former nine-year teammate, but it does seem like they should put the past behind them, especially since Brown owes a lot of his professional success to Roethlisberger.
