It would be very pleasant to have Mr. October back in the good graces of the team after a protracted postseason run that left Yankees MVP Aaron Judge with a ton of annoying Mr. May queries in his inbox. Fortunately, that appears to be imminently doable based on the most recent Houston update.
Reggie Jackson has told the Yankees’ adversary that he wants to move on after nearly four years of counseling Astros manager Jim Crane on personnel choices and rubbing Jose Altuve’s shoulders.
Jackson, who is now 78, plans to retire from the game (for the time being) in order to spend more time with his family, but in the process, he won back the affection of Yankees fans who weren’t quite sure how to react to his previous defection.
In a break from his past hostility, he reportedly paid Hal Steinbrenner a visit during the 2024 World Series, further solidifying that connection.
Jackson emphasized to Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez on FS1’s postseason pregame coverage in 2023 that he had felt his ideas were no longer valued when he departed the Yankees. Jackson felt free in the years following the Boss’s passing, despite being a close confidant of the late George Steinbrenner.
“[New York] has always been a home for me,” Jackson said to the New York Post. I’m a Yankee. I remain a Yankee.
It’s evidently wonderful to see the Astros hat thrown away and replaced with an interlocking NY, regardless of whether he rejoins the team as an active player or merely a reminder of the past achievements. Houston has been the epitome of winning at any costs since 2017, and the Yankees haven’t been able to match their tendency to perform poorly in front of the public. According to recent conversations with Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ organization is still not sure that any of that success was real.
Even though the Astros’ cheating scandal existed before Jackson’s 2021 defection, it still caused him pain. Hopefully, these fences will soon be completely repaired.
