UCLA has hired Indiana co-offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri as its new offensive coordinator, according to a report from the IndyStar.
Sunseri is expected to start with UCLA after Indiana finishes its postseason, according to Osterman.
We had previously heard that Sunseri was the No. 1 target on UCLA’s list, and that UCLA had already been sharing his name as the likely offensive coordinator with recruits leading into Signing Day this week.
Sunseri is one of the hot up-and-coming names in the college football coaching world, with years spent under both Curt Cignetti at Indiana and James Madison as well as a year with Nick Saban as a GA. He’s also known as a good recruiter, having nearly flipped quarterback Julian Lewis from USC to Indiana.
UCLA officially let go Eric Bieniemy this morning, but that process had been in the works for some time, with his departure, and the communication thereof, playing a role in Madden Iamaleava deciding to flip to Arkansas. Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator for a single season in which UCLA struggled to do much of anything offensively.
Sunseri is also a quarterbacks coach by trade, so he could potentially take on those duties as well. Often, coordinators will handle a position group as well, most frequently the quarterback room. Bieniemy did not.
