Ohio State backup QB Devin Brown enters transfer portal but will stay with the team for playoffs

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown has officially entered the transfer portal after spending three years with the Buckeyes as a backup. Brown made the announcement on social media on Sunday, sharing that he plans to remain with Ohio State through the College Football Playoff. His decision follows a series of quarterback struggles, including a tough loss in a 2023 competition to Kyle McCord, which left Brown in a backup role.

Despite expectations, Brown found himself behind McCord in the 2023 season, ultimately getting limited opportunities on the field. The situation became even more complicated when Ohio State added Kansas State transfer Will Howard to the roster for the 2024 season. With Howard joining the team, Brown’s prospects for earning significant playing time in 2024 diminished further. The Buckeyes’ quarterback room is expected to be crowded for 2025, as Ohio State will also feature Julian Sayin, a highly-touted recruit who was ranked as the nation’s top quarterback prospect for the 2024 class.

Over his three years at Ohio State, Brown has seen limited action on the field, with a total of 325 passing yards and three touchdowns. Most of his contributions came in mop-up duty during blowout games. Brown’s entry into the transfer portal is a clear signal that he seeks more opportunities to showcase his talents elsewhere, rather than remaining in a crowded quarterback competition at Ohio State.

Given his potential and experience, Brown will likely attract attention from programs looking for a talented quarterback with starting potential. As he prepares to leave Ohio State, he will look for a new team where he can pursue a larger role and potentially earn a starting spot, something that has been elusive in his time with the Buckeyes.
