BREAKING NEWS: Snooker Icon Ronnie O’Sullivan Announces Retirement Date After Masters

London, UK (January 5, 2025) – In a stunning revelation, snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has announced that he will retire from professional snooker following the prestigious Masters tournament later this month. The announcement has sent shockwaves through the snooker world, as O’Sullivan, widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport, confirmed his decision in an emotional statement.

O’Sullivan, 48, revealed his plans during a press conference ahead of the 2025 Masters, which is set to take place from January 8-15 at Alexandra Palace in London. The six-time World Champion, who has amassed a staggering 38 ranking titles and holds the record for the most competitive century breaks in snooker history, stated that while he will compete in the Masters, it will mark the final chapter of his illustrious career.

“This is it for me,” O’Sullivan said, his voice filled with emotion. “I’ve had an incredible journey in snooker, and I’ve been lucky enough to achieve things I never dreamed possible. But the time has come for me to step away. After the Masters, that’s it. I’ll be retiring. I feel like I’ve given everything I can to the game, and it’s time for me to move on to the next phase of my life.”

O’Sullivan’s announcement marks the end of a remarkable era in snooker. Over the past three decades, O’Sullivan has become synonymous with the sport, known for his rapid play, flawless technique, and unmatched skill. His performances on the table have captivated fans worldwide, and he has earned the nickname “The Rocket” for his lightning-fast style of play, as well as his record-breaking feats.

Throughout his career, O’Sullivan has been a trailblazer in the sport, winning multiple World Championships, UK Championships, and Masters titles. His stunning 147 break – the maximum possible score in snooker – is regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the sport’s history. But despite his success and fame, O’Sullivan has often spoken candidly about the mental and physical toll that a long career in snooker can take, and his desire for new challenges.

“I’ve always said I wanted to leave the sport on my terms,” O’Sullivan explained. “I’ve had some incredible moments in my career, but I don’t want to be someone who overstays their welcome. The game has given me everything, but now I’m ready for something else. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family, pursuing other passions, and living life outside the snooker hall.”

The news of O’Sullivan’s retirement has led to an outpouring of support and admiration from fans, fellow players, and snooker organizations. Many have taken to social media to express their gratitude for his contributions to the sport, while others are already reflecting on his legacy as one of snooker’s all-time greats.

“Ronnie is a once-in-a-lifetime talent,” said Stephen Hendry, a fellow snooker legend and seven-time World Champion. “He’s revolutionized the game in so many ways. He’s made snooker more exciting, more accessible, and more entertaining than anyone before him. It’s been a privilege to watch him play, and I know the sport will miss him.”

O’Sullivan’s decision to retire after the Masters also raises the stakes for his final competitive tournament. While many fans are hoping to see him lift one last major title, O’Sullivan himself has played down the idea of a fairy-tale finish, instead focusing on enjoying his final matches and giving everything he has left.

“Obviously, winning would be a great way to end, but I’m not going to put any extra pressure on myself,” O’Sullivan said. “I just want to go out there and enjoy my snooker. It’s been a fantastic ride, and I’m grateful for every moment of it.”

As the Masters approaches, O’Sullivan will look to add one more chapter to his already legendary career. Whether he walks away with another title or simply enjoys his final moments on the snooker stage, his retirement marks the end of an era in the sport.

Ronnie O’Sullivan’s legacy is undeniable. He will leave behind a sport forever changed by his brilliance, his flair, and his unique style. The snooker world will undoubtedly feel his absence, but his contributions to the game will live on for generations to come.
