Georgia football fans are accustomed to seeing Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs pursue top-tier recruits across the nation. This often means competing with elite programs for these prospects, though that isn’t always the case.
Recently, four-star wide receiver Jayden McGregory revealed his top eight school choices, with Steve Wiltfong confirming that Georgia made the list.
According to 247Sports, McGregory ranks as the No. 2 player in his home state of Iowa and is also listed as the No. 159 overall prospect in the country.
It’s expected that a top-160 player in the country would have many of the nation’s top programs in his final eight choices. However, McGregory’s recruitment stands out because that isn’t entirely the case.According to On3, McGregory’s top eight schools include Minnesota, Kansas, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, Louisville, and Michigan State.
This list is unique, as it features powerhouse programs like Tennessee and Michigan, but also includes several schools that aren’t traditionally among the nation’s elite.
While recruits have the freedom to choose any school, it’s notable that several programs in McGregory’s top eight, which may not be on Georgia’s level, are geographically closer to his home in Iowa. However, this makes his recruitment even more intriguing, as one might expect Iowa or Iowa State to be included if proximity were a key factor—but neither made the list.
According to 247Sports, McGregory has scheduled official visits with Minnesota and Louisville.
It will be interesting to see if Georgia secures a visit as well, making this recruitment one to watch due to the unexpected mix of programs in his final eight.
