BREAKING NEWS: ESPN Analyst Sends Encouraging Message on Duke Star Cooper Flagg’s Development After SMU Win

Durham, NC (January 5, 2025) – ESPN college basketball analyst and former NBA player Jay Bilas has sent a powerful and encouraging message regarding the development of Duke University’s star freshman, Cooper Flagg, following the Blue Devils’ 82-67 victory over the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs on Friday night.

Flagg, who has been widely regarded as one of the top high school basketball prospects in recent years, has already made a significant impact in his first season with the Blue Devils. The 6’9” forward, known for his dynamic playmaking, elite defense, and basketball IQ, led Duke in scoring with 22 points against SMU while also contributing eight rebounds, three assists, and four blocks in the decisive win.

Bilas, who has been closely following Flagg’s development, appeared on ESPN’s post-game coverage, offering high praise for the freshman’s performance and future prospects. His comments come after a string of standout performances by Flagg, who has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting young players in college basketball.

Basketball Fans React To Cooper Flagg's Performance In Duke-SMU Game

“I’ll tell you what, Cooper Flagg is everything we thought he’d be and more,” Bilas said. “What I saw tonight was a young player who continues to develop at a rapid pace, and that’s something that shouldn’t be overlooked. This is a kid who, just a few months ago, was dominating at the high school level, and now, he’s making plays in college basketball like he’s been doing this for years.”

Bilas went on to emphasize Flagg’s versatility and basketball IQ, pointing out that the freshman’s ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor was a testament to his readiness for the next level.

“He’s not just a scorer – he’s a complete player. You saw tonight, defensively, he was all over the court. Four blocks, altering shots, and doing all the little things that contribute to winning,” Bilas continued. “Offensively, he’s got the ability to stretch the floor, make plays in transition, and score in a variety of ways. But what really stands out is his mentality. He’s not just about individual stats, he’s about winning. And that’s what Duke needs.”

Flagg, who had long been the top recruit in the class of 2024, made headlines last year when he chose to play for Duke over other high-profile programs. His decision to join the Blue Devils has already paid dividends, as Coach Jon Scheyer’s team has found a reliable and dynamic centerpiece in Flagg. As Duke aims for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, Flagg’s development will be crucial to the team’s success.

Despite his success early in his college career, Flagg’s journey has not been without challenges. The transition from high school to college basketball can often be difficult for top recruits, but Flagg’s poise and ability to adjust to the higher level of competition have impressed coaches and analysts alike.

Following the SMU win, Duke’s head coach Jon Scheyer was quick to praise his star player, but also emphasized that Flagg’s development is a continuous process.

“Cooper is continuing to learn and grow with every game. He’s got such a high ceiling, but he’s also humble and willing to put in the work every day. That’s what makes him special,” Scheyer said. “We’re just scratching the surface of what he can do.”

As for Bilas, his encouraging message for Flagg highlighted the bright future that lies ahead for both the player and Duke’s program.

“The sky’s the limit for Cooper Flagg,” Bilas concluded. “If he continues to develop at this pace, we’re talking about a player who could very well be one of the top picks in the NBA Draft in just a few years. He’s got the talent, the work ethic, and the mentality to succeed at the highest levels.”

With Duke’s victory over SMU, the Blue Devils have improved to 13-2 on the season, and Flagg’s growth remains a key storyline to follow as the team looks to make a run toward March Madness. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see just how far Flagg’s development can take him – and whether he can lead Duke to another national title in the process.
