Last year was undoubtedly the finest season the Detroit Lions have had in a very long time and one of their best seasons ever. Last season, the Lions hosted a home playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams after winning the NFC North. The Lions won their first playoff game in more than 30 years, and they went on to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their next home playoff game. They had a fantastic season, greatly aided by the players Detroit selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.
After the 2023 NFL Draft, a lot of people had doubts about Brad Holmes and the Lions due to some of their selections, particularly early on. Because of how early they were selected, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta are two choices who are under scrutiny. Because of how wonderfully those two rookies played near the remainder of the season, Holmes looked like a genius. Given that they were two of the league’s top rookies, it was evident why Holmes is regarded as one of the NFL’s top general managers. The Lions’ success from the previous season was greatly attributed to their rookie class, and their continued success will be much anticipated. Detroit’s nucleus of young players is excellent.
Not only did those rookies have a tremendous impact during the regular season, but they also had a significant impact for the Lions throughout the playoffs. Seeing players who had never been on that stage before was remarkable. They were always up to the challenge, and their contribution to Detroit’s successful postseason run was invaluable.
The Lions were one victory away from playing in the Super Bowl after defeating the Bucs and Rams. In the NFC Championship game, they traveled to face the San Francisco 49ers, and Detroit performed admirably. After controlling the first half of the game, the Lions led by 17 points going into the third quarter. Unfortunately for Detroit, following that, things started to go wrong.
