Under normal circumstances, Ohio State linebacker Mitchell Melton’s announcement that he’s transferring would go mostly unnoticed.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound player entered the transfer portal before the Buckeyes’ national championship game but remained with the team for the game.
On Tuesday, he announced his decision to transfer to the University of Virginia, although his announcement on Instagram drew attention for another reason. The graphic in the announcement shows Melton towering over UVA’s Scott Stadium. The Cavaliers logo, the ACC logo, and even a picture of Virginia’s state bird, the cardinal, are superimposed on that image.
There is also a big skyline behind Melton. Problem: That skyline is from Richmond, about 70 miles away. Charlottesville is the quintessential small college town with many nice features. One thing it does not have is a large skyline.
BroBible.com pointed out the error and then outlined the total disconnection between Charlottesville and Richmond. However, it also noted that Milton’s representatives, the A&P Agency, “are very good at what they do. This is not to discredit their standing in the business.”
Richmond, of course, has its own football program, the University of Richmond.
Just a guess here, but this has the look and feel of a mistake in an AI-generated image. Whatever the cause, best wishes to Melton with his new team. The former four-star recruit had 15 tackles and three sacks in two seasons at Ohio State.
